The year is approximately 1100BC and being set in a place known as the Golden Isle, it is certainly a beautiful and well stylised example of modern open world generation. The Golden Isle is an island divided into seven areas. All having new quests and enemies with varying levels of difficulty. On approach to a new area, the music changes, dependant on which one you have entered... you may suddenly feel a slight uneasiness. Although, venturing deeper into 'The Gates of Tartaros' may not be filled with FNAF style jump scares, it is the intense battles and fierce enemies which keep you on the edge of your seat! Albeit, the domain does not rival the likes of GTA V or The Witcher 3, as far as a map goes, this was a highlight for me!
The main protagonist of this story is Fenyx. He/ she (optional) is a likeable character with just enough 21st century gaming wit to keep you engaged during the cutscenes. To save the realm, you (a mere mortal) have been tasked by Zeus to take down Typhon, the big bad boss who is killing the gods of Olympos one by one! The premise is a relatively simple one and you do get the slight feeling of the "Ubisoft formula", even if it is masked by the interesting abilities and weapons which can be unlocked throughout.
The general idea behind the mechanics in Immortal Fenyx Rising is somewhat similar to most action-adventure titles that have an open world and a 3rd character POV. However, where this game does feel different, and more satisfying is when you secure the perfect dodge or parry after slamming your enemies with a giant hammer. Then, proceeding to counter-strike them, going on to blast them into a light golden shower. The sensation is similar to watching one of those "Oddly satisfying YouTube videos", it just feels good.
To summarise: Immortal Fenyx Rising is a colourful array of satisfying hits, strikes and abilities with good character development... But, there will always be that bitter taste of 2020-Ubisoft monotonous open world formulaic ingredient sprinkled throughout.
Would I recommend: Yes... and No. If you are a serious die hard gamer and want top level character development with different missions every time and an interactive open... Go and replay The Witcher 3 for the 3rd time. However, if you are a casual hobbyist looking for decent action-adventure I would say give it a go.
